Chapter IV
Architecture of the Major Harmonic Field
Tonal matrix, scale degrees and axial harmonic functions
6.1 The Concept of the Tonal Matrix and Spontaneous Generation by Stacking
If the isolated study of triads reconstructs the internal morphology of each chord, the harmonic field represents the dynamic ecosystem in which those chords coexist and interact.
6.2 Scale Degrees, Classical Names and Intervallic Interrelations
- Degree I – Tonic: The absolute centre of gravity.
- Degree II – Supertonic: A transitional vector.
- Degree III – Mediant: Ambiguous in nature.
- Degree IV – Subdominant: The opposite pole of the dominant.
- Degree V – Dominant: The point of maximum instability.
- Degree VI – Submediant: Tonic of the relative minor harmonic field.
- Degree VII – Leading tone: A magnetic pull towards degree I.
